NATIONAL TREE DAY 2021
Today, August 1st is National Tree Day. It’s a special day where all Australian’s are encouraged by Planet Ark to head outdoors, dig deep and get dirty hands to give back to the community by planting a tree (or many trees).
Trees are absolutely vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they provide us with oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil, regulate temperatures, give life to the world's wildlife, provide food and improve the land's capacity to adapt to climate change. They also provide us with the materials for tools and shelter and in our opinions, are one of the most stunning creations in existence.
Planting a tree with your child is the perfect way to celebrate and bring attention to National Tree Day. When you plant a tree with a child, you're likely to also seed a fond memory that will grow into a deep connection with the tree as both your child and tree mature. Planting a tree is a gift, not only to yourself and your family, but to those in decades to come who may enjoy its springtime flowers, summer shade, colourful leaves, evergreen branches, wildlife or fallen seeds that may be collected for nature crafting.
We thought it might also be fun for you to take the kids outdoors with their nature journal (or a piece of paper) colours, measuring tape and something to lean on and observe a chosen tree (any tree) and record some observations. These observations and tasks might include:
- Sketch your chosen tree
- Measure its height and record
- Measure its circumference and record
- How many branches does it have?
- What does its bark look like?
- Does it have leaves? If so what colour and shape are they?
- Does it have any fruit, seeds or flowers?
- Can you see its roots?
- Are there any animals living on or in your chosen tree?
- Take a photo of your tree
- Hug your tree and thank it for helping all walks of life on our planet
As mothers, we know that our influence is so incredibly powerful – little eyes are always watching us! Through immersing ourselves in nature, we purposefully lead a life by example to encourage our children to love and respect our Mother Earth.
There is no denying that we need to include sustainable practices as part of our interactions with our children by engaging them in conversations about matters that impact their natural world. Not only does this set a foundation for critical thinking, but also empowers them to realise that together, we can generate change. Collectively we can aim to inspire our little ones to gain a lifelong appreciation that leads to a commitment to keep nature, wildlife and natural resources plentiful, healthy and thriving.
ONE ORDER = THREE TREES PLANTED
Here at Wander + Wild, we choose to give back, reduce our impact and care for our precious planet. Our ONE ORDER = THREE TREES PLANTED means that for every single order we receive, we donate a portion from your purchase to our chosen charity TreeSisters to plant 3 (yes, three!) trees on your behalf. By supporting us, you are also supporting our precious planet - Earth. Click here to read more about TreeSisters .
Thus far, we have collectively contributed to planting 597 trees since March 2021. From the bottom of our hearts, we THANK YOU!
